What is RFID Transponder?
In recent days, a series of smart RFID transponders have been released by DAILY RFID, a leading professional company who is dedicated to developing and producing RFID tech products in China. While, people cannot help asking: “What does RFID transponder refer to?” Then reading this article, the answer will enter in the mind.
The Brief Introduction of RFID Transponder
In general, a complete RFID system consists of three parts, including an interrogator (or reader), a lot of transponders and application software system. So what on earth is RFID transponder? In the original technology field, transponder means the electronic information module that can transmit data and respond information, while in recent years, with the rapid development of RFID, transponder has some new arguments and meanings, which are also called smart tags or tags. Put simply, RFID transponder is the information carrier of RFID system. Currently, most of transponders are passive tags that are comprised by coupling element ( coils or microstrip antenna, etc) and micro-chips.
The Operating Principle of RFID Transponder
When entering the magnetic field and receiving the radio-frequency signal emitted by RFID readers, passive RFID transponders (also called passive tag) send out the product information stored in the chip by virtue of the energy obtained by induced current; while active RFID transponders ( also known as active tag) take the initiative to send a signal at a certain frequency. Then, RFID readers read and decode the information, and send to application software system to handle the relevant data.
The Working Frequency of RFID Transponder
According to different bands, RFID transponders have various characteristics. So let's look at the main features passive transponders show in different working frequencies.
1. From 125KHz to 134.2KHz working frequency, people are used to call it "low frequency" (LF) that is compliant with ISO 11784/ ISO 11785 protocols. Generally speaking, LF RFID transponder has several common chips, including EM4100, EM4001, Hitag-1/2/S and so on, which makes its reading distance always less than 10cm.
2. On the basis of 13.56MHz, the common chips of HF RFID transponder contain MiFare S50/S70/Ultralight (compatible with ISO 14443 protocols) and I-Code-1/2 (according with ISO 15693 standards). And the reading distance of HF RFID transponder ranges from 10cm to 1m.
3. There are also another kind of passive transponders that are considered as UHF RFID transponders working on the frequency of 860MHz~960MHz. Conforming to ISO 18000-6B & ISO 18000-6C EPC Gen2 protocols, UHF RFID transponders have the reading distance up to 10 meters.
The Typical Application of RFID Transponder
RFID transponders with short reading range can endure oil, dust pollution and other harsh environments, so they are usually used to work in such conditions instead of bar code, for example, tracking products on the assembly line of factories. Whereas, due to the reading range up to several meters, long range RFID transponders are often applied into transportation, such as automatic vehicle identification and other charges or identification.
1. In the retail sector, the use of RFID transponders allow each link of tens of thousands goods to be managed orderly, including goods type, price, origin, batch, shelves, inventory, sales and other aspects.
2. Combined with automatic vehicle identification technology and system, RFID transponders make the roads and bridges, parking lots and other vehicle charging places avoid the phenomenon of traffic congestion, which reduces time waste and greatly improves the efficiency of transport and promotes the traffic capacity of transport facilities.
3. On the automated production lines, RFID transponders make the entire production process placed under the strict monitoring and control.
4. According to statistics, RFID transponders have currently been used in a variety of applications: mobile payment, animal husbandry, access control, documentation management, logistics industry, electronic ticket, parking control, production line automation, anti-counterfeiting and so on.
