Unveiled the first working prototype of the $100 laptop
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan unveiled the first working prototype of the $100 laptop Nov. 16 at the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis, Tunisia.
The laptops will come with batteries that can be recharged using a simple wind-up crank and built in WiFi.
A minute’s winding should provide enough power for 40 minutes of use. The machines will also feature a simplified LED display, which will consume just one-tenth of the power of conventional LCD laptops.
The computer will use a 500 megahertz processor, making it slower than most modern laptops, and will come with just 1 gigabyte of memory. But each machine will have four USB ports for peripheral devices and will come with built-in wireless networking.
The laptops will also run on free software – probably the Linux operating system
