Foxconn, Apple's Chinese iPod contractor, has filed a $3.75-million defamation suit against two investigative reporters at China Business News, a leading Shanghai-based financial newspaper. This is the equivalent of more than 500 years of salary for an average reporter in China.
Zhao Chenyu, Party secretary of the All-China Journalists' Association, told China Daily that her association would get involved if the two journalists or their newspaper approached the organization.

2.September 2006 update:
China has directed a contract manufacturer of iPod music players to establish a union this year. The government of the southern boomtown Shenzhen ordered the Hong Fu Jin Precision Industry (Foxconn), the Shenzhen branch of Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry, to set up a union by the end of this year, the Beijing News said. The General Workers' Union of the city had been urging the company to establish a union since 2004, but the company has not done so, it said.

The company first asked for 30 million yuan ($3.77 million) compensation for defamation, but later slashed the claim to just 1 yuan -
